Meet the 1.618 judges for 2021: Nathaniel Wakefield

Nathaniel Wakefield is a director at Batley Partners, a design focused, architecture, interior and graphic design consultancy with its main office in Johannesburg.

Nathaniel joined the PG Bison 1.618 Education Initiative judging panel for the first time in 2021 and has enjoyed seeing what students have proposed in their competition entries that focus on the Strand Street Quarry in Cape Town.

Nathaniel holds a Bachelor of Architectural Technology from the Technical Institute of Cape Peninsula, and Witwatersrand Technikon, 1997. He joined Batley Partners in early 2007 and became a director in 2012. He is responsible for the technical and authorities’ liaisons for the practice.

Nathaniel’s experience in various practices on international retail and commercial projects has allowed him to be at the forefront of technological developments and architectural software innovation. As a result, the practice is a contributor to various pilot programs for new software beta releases.

Nathaniel also heads up the practice’s contribution to South Africa’s business empowerment lobbying and bursary funds for architecture students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
