All your 1.618 brief questions, answered

As the third-year students from architecture and design institutions around the country have been working on their entries for the 2020 PG Bison 1.618 Education Initiative, we’ve had some questions coming in about the brief. We’ve summarised the FAQs here to help you make sure your submission is spot-on:

  • What can I do if I need the competition brief presentation information?

A PowerPoint presentation is available for download on the 1.618 website.

  • What is the closing date for submissions?

Entries close at midnight on 18 September 2020.

  • What are the height restrictions for the building/site?

You may design a building with two storeys (i.e. a ground floor and a first floor).

  • Can beverages be offered as part of the experience?

Beverages may be offered as part of the experience, although food and beverages should not be the main store offering.

  • Is this site a tourist attraction?

While the site would likely be visited by some tourists, the main aim is to appeal to locals.

  • What is the security situation at this precinct?

The main warehouse doors from the street-level are closed at night, which secures the entire precinct. Your store can merely have a lock-up and go solution (e.g. a door and gate will be enough).

  • Should the store we are creating blend in or stand out from the other tenants?

You need to consider the neighbouring tenants’ offerings and design a store that is complementary, but still unique and distinguishable. That’s why the theme is Balance!

  • Should the doors from the brewery be closed off or left as is?

This is totally up to you! You can choose to close it off completely if the brewery does not have any influence on your store or the customer experience. However, if you choose to somehow incorporate the brewery into your store and the customer experience, you may leave the doors accessible.

  • Do we need to keep the existing structure?

No, you do not! This is not a heritage site, so you can demolish what already exists and re-create if you like.
